Freedom and the Ruby Slippers
What does it mean to be free? We can change our circumstances, our geography, our friends, even our families. We can make money, lose money, or give up money all together and go for the monastic life… live off the grid. All of these things have been done in the quest for freedom. I’m not a monk, and I don’t live off the grid… yet 😉. But I’ve tried my hand at the rest. And am I free?
Well… no. But I’m closer.
We have to go through all of these tricks that we think will bring us freedom so that we can have our Dorothy-and-the-Red-Slippers moment. Freedom was with us a long. We just had to believe it.
True freedom is not found in another house, car, job, bank account, or person. It is found within us, in our hearts, the minute we give up our attachments to all of those aforementioned things. We can plan, predict, and control our way into an ashram if we want, but we will not be free until we understand that we ALREADY ARE.
I love writing these posts, because I always learn something about myself. Namely, that I should really listen to my own advice. When I write, I am channeling whatever message Spirit wants me to share, both with you AND with me. As I have been building out my new website, I have re-read a lot of my old blog posts and wondered who in the world wrote them. Ha! This is the beauty, and humor, of Spirit. Lessons around every corner, for all of us.
The painting below, New Beginnings, is the first creation of my new business Hewett Fine Art. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing more about the change, the name, and the ethos that embody my new venture. This beautiful abstract serves as a talisman for my new beginning, and a celebration of this community we have built. It represents the spiritual journey we are all on, whether we are aware of it or not, and how the shedding of each old, stale layer, although painful, always gets us closer to our own beautiful freedom.
