Call off the search…
I want to express what may be an unpopular opinion, especially if you are regularly observing other humans doing things (which is all of us). I have been really present lately with the concept of PURPOSE, and how that looks in my life. And here is where I am with it…
PURPOSE is yet another manifestation of the EGO.
To think that we incarnate in this current lifetime to fulfill some sort of purpose (and that we must figure out what that purpose is and go all-in) is missing the point. Maybe it’s our western culture mindset that creates the belief that in order to be worthy we have to find our purpose and fulfill it. Perhaps it is our need to heal the wounds of our childhood that has us all searching for our purpose in life… like if we can only find our PURPOSE the pain will have been worth it and we will be worthy.
Purpose is just another ego trap. If we attach our worth onto any measurable action, we have missed the enlightenment boat all together and set our own sails for a slightly more elevated land of suffering.
YOUR WORTH IS INHERENT. There is no action that will prove your worth. There are only actions that reflect your inherent worth and those that don’t.
Today I am sitting with this concept and ditching any old stories that had me believing that I am only worthy if I can do something for someone. Rather than searching for my purpose in life, I am realizing that the purpose of life is to just LIVE… It’s a nuanced shift in thinking that feels refreshing, authentic, and peaceful. Purpose is a red herring, people. Dogged determination to find it and live it may feel noble, but you will miss out on so many beautiful, little moments along the way simply because you were blinded by the bright shiny flash of purpose.
For a reforming type-A go-getter, this shift from “living a life of purpose” to “living is the purpose of life” is a practice, not a perfection. Here is how it looks in this moment for me:
~gratitude for the ability to sit in my grandmothers dining room chair and the support it still gives my body,
~awe of my iPad and how it can transform my thoughts into letters and words that will reach you,
~love for the puppies who lay at my feet, and
~excitement for the little miracles that happen every minute of every day.
I show up in love, and know that love is truly what it’s all about. I am love and I choose to express that love in whatever way feels authentic and good in the present moment. This practice takes me from existing as a “human doing” to truly living as a “human being”. I get to show up as my authentic self and marvel at the love and joy that flows because of it. Life is not about finding some solid, defined purpose. Life is about LIVING and EXPERIENCING our inherent worth and love.
If you are searching for purpose, I see you and I love you. And maybe just consider calling off the search for a while and simply just BE YOU.
